Island Community Maps
Coastal communities can become isolated if bridges become impassable due to earthquake, tsunami or structural failure. Each Onshore Island has these key elements: a northern and a southern bridge located on Highway One and streams or rivers defining the northern and southern boundaries. Some Islands have an ingress or egress route option other than Highway One, while other islands would lose their vehicle access if both bridges fail. Our Bridge Maps and Go-Arounds show alternate routes for vehicles, pedestrians and bikes in the event that bridges become impassable.
Albion Ridge, Middle Ridge and Navarro Ridge Islands—PRELIMINARY
Albion Ridge, Middle Ridge, and to a lesser extent, Navarro Ridge communities, face a one-way-in and one-way-out evacuation hazard especially during fires. A local team which includes Albion-Little River Fire Department and Hubs & Routes volunteers has been working to identify Alternate Routes and Safe Havens which could be used during an emergency to save both human and animal lives. The team is also beginning fund-raising efforts to get the routes into condition for later use. The map below details the progress which has been made thus far.
The majority of proposed routes are on private property and certain roadbeds will need improvement to support vehicle traffic. Permission from landowners needs to be obtained before proposed routes become available for use in an emergency. Even then, do not use these routes unless an incident commander or officer directs you to do so.
